Earthly Culture Shock

My post on culture shock yesterday reminded me of my own culture shock during my semester abroad.  I flipped through some of my old files for an illustration:

Many things have surprised me about Spain, but this above all else—

People solicit sex in the newspaper.

Think of the “personals” section with a twist.
Instead of “long walks on the beach,” they write,
“Tengo dinero.  Ganas de sexo.”
[Translation: “I have money.  I feel like sex.”].

After the initial shock, I found this quite funny.

April 2006

I swear that’s not what I intended when I said heaven will be culture shock.
